About my home country, Austria
Excuse me if you already knew this, but I'm sure there are many people, mainly non-Austrians, who aren't aware of these historical facts. Since this posting is primarily directed at non-Austrians, I'm writing it in English.
Germany and Austria are two countries in Central Europe the official language of which is German. The reasons why they aren't one single country are of historical nature: Austria is more or less the part of the former Holy Roman Empire that was ruled by the Habsburgs. When Napoleon declared himself Emperor of France, the Habsburgs founded the Austrian Empire in order not to lose the title "Emperor". After the First World War, the parts of the Austrian Empire that were populated by non-Germanic peoples seceded. The remaining state was first called "German Austria" and the government wanted it to unite with Germany, but the French were opposed to this and so Austria remained a separate country. It was only a part of Germany for a couple of years under Hitler's rule.
Nowadays Austria is a republic and a stable democracy with a highly developed private sector.
